Botswana

Botswana is an Independent Republic. Renowned for its abundant and varied wildlife, and its wide-open, sparsely populated countryside. The most dominant geological feature in Botswana is the Kalahari Desert, followed closely by the Okavango Delta. Botswana is landlocked, surrounded by Nambia to the north and west, Zimbabwe to the east, and South Africa to the south. The capital is Gabarone.

The Okavango River flows in from the highlands of Angola forming the Okavango Delta. The Okavango is the largest delta system in the world, and home to several animal species, including the shy sitatunga. Game viewing in Okavango can be in a mokoro, a dug-out canoe or walking on several of the islands formed by the waterways.

Chobe National Park is probably the next most popular game reserve in Botswana. This diverse eco-system features the now dry Savute Channel, and borders Moremi Game Reserve. Moremi links into the Okavango Delta. The vistas here are spectacular, and most lodges offer you a combination of walking safaris as well as, driving safaris.

Kenya

Kenya is an Independent Republic. It covers 585,000 square kilometers and lies astride the Equator bordering Somalia to the northeast, Uganda to the west and Tanzania to the south. The population is about 20 million. The capital is Nairobi with a population of about one million. Other major towns include Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Meru, and Eldoret. Kenya has several popular game reserves and National Parks. Samburu Game Reserve in the north is a semi-arid landscape, with the Uaso Nyiro river running through.

The Masai Mara National Game Reserve to the southwest is an extension of the Serengeti National Park. The Masai Mara is Kenya’s most popular park. The annual migration of wildebeest and zebra is an amazing wildlife experience.

Amboseli Game Reserve is located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. The elephant herds here are a sight to see against the mountain backdrop. Lake Nakuru National Park is located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Black rhino, white rhino and the Rothschild giraffe make this park home.

The Kenya Highlands are home to Aberdare National Park and the Mount Kenya National Park. Accommodations here are usually of the tree lodge variety. Game viewing takes place around the floodlit waterholes.

Namibia

Namibia, is officially Republic of Namibia, with an area of 318,000 sq miles (823,620 sq km), located in South West Africa.

It is bordered by Angola in the north, by Zambia in the northeast, by Botswana in the east, by South Africa in the southeast and south, and by the Atlantic Ocean in the west.

The Orange River forms the southern boundary, and the Kunene, Cubango, and Zambezi rivers form parts of the northern and northeastern borders.

The capital and largest city of Namibia is Windhoek. English is the official language, however, Afrikaans is actually the common language of most of the population. German is also spoken by a large number of the residents. Indigenous languages include Oshivambo, Herero and Nama.

Namibia’s 200 million acres include five distinct geographical areas: the Central Plateau, the Namib Desert, the Escarpment, the Bushveld and the Kalahari Desert. The landscape ranges from ocean shores to woodland savannas, from lush floodplains to picturesque deserts.

South Africa

At the southernmost tip of the African continent lies South Africa, a newly formed republic, and truly “A World in One Country.” It covers 700,000 square miles.

It is flanked in the west by the Atlantic Ocean, in the south and east by the Indian Ocean, in the north by Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and in the north-east by Mozambique and Swaziland. The population is approximately 35,000,000.

There are three capital cities, Cape Town (legislative), Pretoria (administrative) and Bloemfontein (judicial). Johannesburg is the largest industrial, financial and cultural center in South Africa. Cape Town and Durban are two of the most popular holiday playgrounds.

Kruger National Park is the largest wildlife preserve in South Africa. There are several private reserves on the periphery of Kruger. These privately held camps and lodges o er excellent game viewing including night game drives.

Shamwari and Phinda are also popular game reserves, with Phinda offering ocean viewing on the Indian Ocean.

Tanzania

Tanzania is an Independent Republic - formerly known as Tanganyika. It covers 362,820 square miles, half the size of Western Europe and is East Africa’s largest nation. It is situated just below the Equator and shares its borders with eight countries, as well as, Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa.

To the northwest, there are shared borders with Rwanda and Burundi. Tanzania is restricted in the west with the former Zaire (Democratic Republic of Congo) by Lake Tanganyika, another major lake. To the south is the border with Zambia and Malawi, as well as Lake Malawi the 3rd major lake in Tanzania.

To the south along the coast is the border with Mozambique. To the north/ north-east, close to the border with Kenya, towers the peak of Kilimanjaro, the highest summit in Africa.

Tanzania’s most famous National Park is the Serengeti National Park. There are eight different ecosystems within the park and this is home to the annual migration.

Ngorongoro Crater is a phenomenon on its own. Game viewing is conducted on the crater floor which is 100 square miles. Lake Manyara National Park is a heavily wooded area famous for their tree climbing lions. Tarangire National Park, Ruaha National Park and the Selous Game Reserve are three wildlife reserves off the beaten track. The wildlife is abundant and the accommodations are of the highest quality.

Zambia

Zambia with inhabitants numbering just less than one million, and land mass of 752,000 sq miles, is a sparsely populated country in the south- western area of Africa. In area it is larger than Texas, or four times the size of the United Kingdom.

Zambia is a landlocked country. Zambia’s diverse peoples, geographical/geological areas and climate, present a fascinating spectrum to both tourist and scientist alike.

Zambia is home to Victoria Falls. David Livingstone named these Falls after the Queen. A spectacular sight with more than 250 million gallons of water cascade into the gorge. Columns of spray can be seen for miles around.

North Luangwa and South Luangwa are two of the nest game reserves in Zambia. Kafue is one of Africa’s largest game reserves. The Lower Zambezi has intense game along the banks of the river. This is the best place to participate in canoeing safaris.
